Julian

Julian’s Situation

  • Julian is a 3 year-old boy
  • Has diagnoses of Down Syndrome and Kleinfelter Syndrome and is very sensitive to touch and movement
  • He is significantly delayed with his gross motor skills and specifically walking
  • Julian needs walking equipment.

The Help Needed

Despite ongoing physical therapy no-one has been able to figure out what piece of equipment if any would help Julian independently walk. Frustrated, they requested a very restrictive and supportive walking system that has been associated with promoting more dependence on further equipment.

Result

Julian continues to progress using his walker throughout his home and preschool classroom. Two months after receiving his walker his mother reports that Julian is taking a few independent steps and doing new things every day. Julian's Family is thrilled. They carry him much less and he walks more!

How Ability Found Helped

After discussing Julian's case with his family and physical therapist we were concerned about the complexities of his diagnoses and the walking system requested. Before placing the requested equipment we chose to consult with a physical therapist who has extensive experience and knowledge with children like Julian. Working collaboratively with Julian's current physical therapist our consultant chose to evaluate him personally. During the examination through different handling techniques our consultant was able to get Julian to stand and take a few steps with very little support. With the success of the evaluation it was determined that Julian would benefit from a more simple walking aid than the system originally proposed. The Ability Foundation had a refurbished 'posterior rolling walker for children' which was ideal for Julian's needs. The family received the walker the next day. Paying and a consultant to evaluate Julian and furnishing an appropriate "In-kind" walker saved approximately $1500.
