History of Ability Found
Dr. Ernest Robison and his wife Anneke established the Ability Foundation in 1993. Their purpose was then as it is today, to provide rehabilitation and medical equipment as well as assistive technology to children and adults with disabilities.
The Robison's passion to help the disabled stems from their now deceased son, Matthew, who had cerebral palsy. Their experience with Matthew gave them an understanding of the tremendous role that equipment and technology play in the development of people with disabilities.
The Equipment Placement Programs
The Ability Foundation is requesting a donations to help fund The Equipment Placement Program for 2009. This donation will be utilized to directly benefit children and adults who are disabled and will not go toward non-direct program costs.
The specific purpose of the Equipment Placement Program is to purchase/recycle medical and rehabilitation equipment as well as assistive technology for children and adults with disabilities. Demographically, we serve people of all ethnicities, religious affiliations, and of any social status on a first-come first-serve basis without discrimination of any kind.
We Offer a Unique and Essential Service
To our knowledge we are the only charitable organization in the Intermountain West whose primary mission is to place medical and rehabilitation equipment to people with disabilities.
Other organizations place equipment on a charitable basis but it is not their primary-mission.
• Hospitals primarily use their donated funds and expertise for critical medical procedures.
• Government agencies spread their funds on a wide array of services leaving clients on long lists for equipment.
• Other charitable and church organizations tend to place low technology adaptive living items because they do not have the expertise necessary to place more sophisticated equipment.
• Many schools water down their educational goals and budgets so they do not have to purchase equipment to meet a specific individual's needs.
The Equipment Placement Program's target population is children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities. The following are examples of how we positively impact the lives of the clients with whom we work.
• We have helped clients that have insurance but do not have the income for the co-payment required for necessary equipment.
• We have assisted clients that have good insurance coverage but the company will not pay for the specific piece of equipment they need.
• We have seen clients use their insurance coverage to buy the wrong piece of equipment and are left without coverage to buy the appropriate equipment.
• We have assisted clients, especially children, who have outgrown or worn out their equipment before the insurance company will buy a replacement.
• In cases where insurance companies do provide equipment but the time lag is too great, we have donated equipment for clients to use in the interim.
• We regularly provide equipment for people who do not have any insurance coverage.
